The industry changed the thing it rewards and did not send a memo.
For about a decade the job was growth. Get the users, worry later, and there was always more money to worry later with. You could build a career on things that had never made a peso, and many of us did.
Now the job is margin. Every feature is asked what it costs. Every person is asked what they cover. The layer of managers who existed to coordinate the growth has been quietly removed, and the coordinating landed on the people who were already building.
I am not mourning it. Some of what got cut deserved cutting, and I have worked in enough padded organisations to know what padding costs the people inside them. But it is worth saying plainly what the trade is: flatter organisations are faster, and the speed is paid for by individual contributors carrying decisions they were not hired to carry, usually without anyone renaming the role.
I have no figures for you. I have the shape of it. Every team I talk to is smaller than it was and expected to cover more ground, and nobody I know has been told this is the new arrangement. They worked it out on their own, the way you work out that a friendship has changed.
